SUMMARY OF RESEARCH. There are between 6000 and 8000 rare diseases (RD), most of them chronic, heavily disabling and life-threatening. It is estimated that one in 15 people could be affected by a rare disease – 520 million people worldwide, 85 million of those in Africa alone. 75% of RD affect children, of whom 30% will not live to see their 5th birthday.
